What is the most sentimental item you inherited from someone dear to you and what does it mean to you?

My sister got the painting that she won with but I got the two paintings she did just for me. If there is a fire in the house, those two paintings would be the first things I would grab to save.
My mother was raised during the Depression and had to quit school to help support the family. Before she had to quit, she had won an art contest and was practicing to become an artist. She had the fire for it but the Depression, the war, marriage, and two daughters drove the idea out of her head.
I had/have some talent but no fire. Still I took art for four in high school. One day, mom and I were having an argument. There were occupations in those days that I couldn’t even try for due to me being female. She said that maybe a son would do it and that would be good. Not so good to me but suddenly, I was hit with an idea.

I told her that she wanted to be an artist but couldn’t because of the depression, etc. Why didn’t she try now. She said that she had no training and couldn’t do. With a grin, I reminded her that I had the training and I would teach all I knew - shadow, line, etc. She was scared but we went to an art store and got her supplies and I taught her and fire lit again.
She lived another 15 years and in those years, she drew and painted (and took more classes) and in the last year of her life got a ribbon for her paintings at a local art show.
